This process entails the freezing of a female’s eggs and a male’s sperms for preservation.
Sperms – Some of the most prevalent reasons behind sperm freezing include:-
Sperms are frozen within hours of extraction and can be frozen up to 10 years (more in special cases) with the payment of an affordable amount per year. These sperms can be later used after being de-frozen by the owner later for IVF or can be donated to another couple for IUI, ICSI or IVF.
Oocytes - Not just sperms, but egg cells from females are also frozen for preservation. Some of the reasons behind egg freezing include:-
Just like sperms, ovum or female egg cells are also frozen within hours of extraction and stored up to 10 years (more in special cases) with regular payment of a nominal fee. These eggs can be thawed and used in the future by the owner or a recipient to whom they are donated to create embryos by fusing them with a male’s sperms.
Embryos – Embryos formed in the lab by the fusion of extracted eggs and sperms can also be preserved by being put in cryo or being frozen for as long as is required. Thereafter, they can be defrosted and then placed inside the uterus of the designated female to let them implant themselves onto the endometrium to initiate pregnancy. In addition, they can also be donated to another deprived infertile couple in which both the partners are unable to produce either of the required cells to make an embryo
Hysteroscopy is a procedure in which a slim, tubal instrument called the “Hysteroscope”, with a light source and a camera attached to its tip, is inserted inside the uterus through the vagina and cervix (vaginal or cervical tract) to enable the doctor to examine the vagina, cervix and uterus from within. This examination helps in finding abnormalities such as fibroids, adhesions and polyps that may be causing abdominal pain and bleeding. In this procedure, a doctor can not only examine the organs but also treat the problems that surface in the examination.
Hysteroscopy is further classified into two procedures:-
Cyst Aspiration is a process in which a fine needle is inserted into a cyst to suck out all the fluid or cells within hence, removing the cyst completely. The most common areas to be worked on include the breasts (lumps, swelling, soreness and cysts) and ovaries. The cysts are removed or the liquid in them is drawn out using a syringe to relieve discomfort and/or complications.
The first step involves scanning the targeted location with an ultrasound to locate the cyst(s). Then a doctor examines the location physically. Later, a sample of the constituents of the cyst(s) are extracted and sent to the lab to be tested. This helps to determine why and how the cyst was formed.
Even though it is not done often, but local anaesthesia (in the skin) may be given to the patient before the insertion if the doctor feels the requirement or if requested by the patient.On insertion, the doctor will move the needle to and fro to gather all the cells to be remove while pulling the plunger. More than one sample may be taken depending on how many tests are to be taken and also, to collect sufficient amount of sample.
Sperm Donation:
Donating sperm is considered as one of the noblest causes a man can undertake. When the male partner has zilch sperm or his sperm are of low-quality, they need some other man who is willing to donate sperm which would fuse with eggs of the female partner to form an embryo. That embryo would be implanted in the womb to produce a healthy child after 9 months.
Egg Donation:
When the female partner is unable to produce the egg due to various reasons like menopause, premature ovarian failure or age factor, the infertile couple seeks a woman who would donate eggs in place of a sum of money. These eggs are fertilized and implanted in the womb of the desired mother. Thereafter, children are born naturally. The desired mother has to undergo two to three sessions of hormonal therapy before obtaining eggs from the donor woman. It is called Hormonal Replacement Technique. This therapy is used to determine whether the womb of a woman is competent for implantation.
Embryo Donation:
When both the male partner and the female partner are infertile, they opt for embryo donation. In this, the embryo is developed by infusing the sperm and eggs of the donor couple and the embryo is implanted in the uterus of the female partner. The couple who are donating the sperm and eggs undergo a series of tests to determine any medical ailment or the quality of sperm and eggs.
